Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Evaluations
Your animal can be an important part of your emotional well-being.
For many people, an animal provides comfort, grounding, companionship, and a sense of safety during difficult moments. If you notice that having your animal nearby helps you manage anxiety, emotional distress, or other mental health challenges, you may be wondering whether an Emotional Support Animal could be right for you.
At Moonchild Counseling®, ESA evaluations provide a supportive space to explore your mental health needs, the role your animal plays in your life, and whether an emotional support animal is clinically appropriate for you.
What is an Emotional Support Animal?
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is an animal that provides emotional support to a person experiencing a mental health condition or symptoms that significantly impact their daily life.
ESAs can provide comfort and support in many different ways. Your animal may help you feel grounded during periods of anxiety, provide companionship when you’re struggling emotionally, or help you feel more regulated and secure in your environment.
An ESA does not require specialized training to perform specific tasks. The emotional support they provide is connected to your mental health and individual needs.

What is an ESA Evaluation?
An ESA evaluation is a mental health assessment that looks at your current emotional and psychological needs and the role your animal plays in supporting you.
During the evaluation, we’ll talk about your mental health history, current symptoms, daily functioning, and your relationship with your animal. We’ll also explore how your animal supports you and whether an ESA may be an appropriate part of your mental health care.
The goal is to provide an individualized clinical assessment based on your circumstances.
You might be considering an ESA if…
• Having your animal nearby helps you feel calmer or more grounded when you’re experiencing anxiety or emotional distress.
• Difficult emotions feel easier to manage when your animal is nearby.
• A consistent source of comfort, companionship, or emotional security comes from your relationship with your animal.
• A move is on the horizon, and you’re wondering whether an ESA may be appropriate for your housing situation.
• You’re considering an ESA and want to understand whether one may be clinically appropriate for you.
• An animal already plays an important role in your emotional well-being, and you want to explore your options with a mental health professional.

FAQs
Does an ESA need special training?
No. Emotional Support Animals provide support through their presence and companionship rather than performing specific trained tasks.
Can an ESA help with anxiety?
An animal may provide meaningful emotional support for people experiencing anxiety and other mental health challenges. Your evaluation will consider your individual symptoms, needs, and circumstances.
Will I automatically receive an ESA letter?
An ESA letter or documentation is provided when an emotional support animal is determined to be clinically appropriate following an evaluation. Completing an evaluation does not guarantee documentation.
Can you complete an ESA evaluation if you are not already a therapy client?
Yes. ESA evaluations can be completed as a standalone service. You do not need to begin ongoing therapy with Moonchild Counseling® to request an evaluation.
